| I wish to present preliminary observations about the atypical
bacteria/bacteria-like organisms, chlamydia, in patients with clinical signs
and symptoms of chronic prostatitis. |
- I have noted that about half the patients and/or their regular sexual
partners have increased levels of IgG antibodies to a chlamydia species in their serum. About half of these are to C. trachomatis and about half to C. pneumoniae.
- The clinical significance has not been proven, especially for C. pneumoniae, but we did obtain a history of oral sex in all cases.
- Remarkably, we noted that nearly all patients decreased the titer of
chlamydia antibodies in their serum after they were treated for several weeks with antibiotics reported to be effective in treating chlamydia. In about half of these patients, the antibody level decreased to within normal levels.
|
| The above observations suggest that chlamydia species may play a role in chronic
prostatitis. Further studies are needed. |
