Ureaplasma, in patients with Chronic Prostatitis |

| We wish to present preliminary observations about the atypical
bacteria/bacteria-like organisms, ureaplasma, in patients with clinical signs
and symptoms of chronic prostatitis. |
- We have isolated Ureaplasma urealyticum from about 25 percent of EPS
specimens from patients with "chronic prostatitis" and/or from genital cultures from their regular sexual partners. The organism was recovered more frequently from genital cultures of the female partners than from the EPS from male patients.
- Mycoplasma species were isolated only rarely.
- When patients and their sexual partners were treated with antibiotics
reported to be effective in treating ureaplasma, follow-up cultures usually were negative after two weeks of treatment. However, occasionally, a prolonged course of antibiotics was required.
- Most of these patients had epididymal pain. Not all had tenderness to
palpation of the epididymis, suggesting that, in some cases, the pain was due to nerve damage.
|
| It is possible that in some cases, the pain is referred. We refer to this condition as chronic epididymal syndrome (CES). |
|
The above observations suggest that ureaplasma species may play a role in "chronic
prostatitis" and/or CES. Further studies are needed |
