| We wish to present preliminary results from an ongoing study about the
role of fungi in chronic prostatitis. |
- We searched, histologically, over 50 surgical specimens of prostate tissue
for fungi and found none (although most had areas of inflammation).
- We searched, cytologically, over 100 expressed prostatic secretions (EPS)
specimens from patients with chronic prostatitis for fungi and found fungi only rarely. As far as we could determine, there were no clinical correlates, and the findings were likely due to contamination.
- We cultured over 100 EPS specimens from patients with chronic prostatitis
for fungi and isolated fungi only rarely. Again, as far as we could determine, there were no clinical correlates, and the isolates were likely contaminates.
|
| Therefore, we believe that fungi do not play a major role in chronic
prostatitis. If they ever do, it is only very rarely. |
